WHAT IS FASORACETAM?
Fasoracetam is a research chemical of the racetam family. It is a nootropic and has been in clinical trials for vascular dementia and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.
Fasoracetam is being tested in Phase II/III clinical trials for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
The benefits of fasoracetam are mostly in anecdote, but there are some studies to suggest a correlation. Given that there are millions of children and adolescents using amphetamine-based ADHD medication, studies testing fasoracetam effects is a good sign. Even better, fasoracetam has made it to phase II and III of clinical trials, which could suggest a high effectiveness for this purpose. As of June 2016, the drug was still in these trials.
Research has shown that fasoracetam works by the following mechanisms:
Fasoracetam increases the release of acetylcholine from the cerebral cortex. Acetylcholine is a neurotransmitter in the brain is responsible for memory and learning. Fasoracetam also increases the uptake of choline, a nutrient needed to create acetylcholine, in the cortex and the hippocampus.
Fasoracetam increases the number of receptors (in the cortex) for the inhibitory neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA).
It also activates certain types of glutamate receptors (metabotropic glutamate receptors). Glutamate is the main excitatory neurotransmitter.
FASORACETAM BENEFITS
Another interesting benefit of fasoracetam is as an antidepressant and anxiolytic. A study of rats with learned helplessness showed that the drug had potent antidepressant effects without some of the side effects (such as MAOI interactions). This study concluded that GABA (B) up-regulation was able to increase test results in the animals.
Fasoracetam Uses:
1) Fasoracetam May Prevent Memory Loss
In rats, fasoracetam prevented memory problems caused by baclofen, a GABA-B receptor activator. It also reduced amnesia by increasing acetylcholine and reducing the effects of GABA-B activation.
2) Fasoracetam May Reduce Symptoms of Depression
Abnormal GABA levels are linked to certain brain disorders, including anxiety and depression. Fasoracetam reduced depressive symptoms in rats that were conditioned to feel helpless to avoid negative situations (learned helplessness)
FASORACETAM DOSAGE
10 – 15 mg per day (average dose)
30 – 50 mg per day (large dose)
Side Effects
Commonly reported side effects of fasoracetam includes a headache and fatigue. Large doses of fasoracetam (>1,000 mg/day) may cause bradycardia, a condition in which the heart rate is slowed down below 60 bpm
